SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 30, the students of Mrs. Raylan Gilliland’s honors chemistry class at Sylacauga High School (SHS) surprised the representatives from Toyota of Sylacauga when they came to the class to present the July sales check to the Sylacauga City Schools (SCS) Foundation.

The students created a large “Thank You” sign for the Foundation and the dealership that has presented a sales check every month since January of 2021.

Toyota of Sylacauga has donated $30 for every new car sold to the Foundation. Their contributions thus far equaled $29,040 with the July sales check representing 37 new cars sold that month. July’s check amount was $1,110.

These contributions directly affect learning for all students in the SCS system by providing needed equipment, supplies, and teaching manipulatives to enhance learning.

With the Toyota money, Mrs. Gilliland was able to purchase a lab set of high precision analytical scales and digital magnetic hotplates, chemistry glassware including beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks, graduated cylinders, volumetric pipettes, burettes, test tubes, and thermometers among other items.

“We at SHS would like to thank Toyota of Sylacauga and the Foundation for such a wonderful contribution to our students,” said Mrs. Gilliland. “Providing our students with state-of-the-art chemistry equipment not only broadens their skill set but also allows them to appreciate what STEM classes truly encompass.”

The SCS Foundation was created in 1988 by Dr. Joseph B. Morton and was one of the first educational foundations of its type in Alabama and the nation. The Foundation’s role is to support Sylacauga City Schools in the system’s quest for excellence and is dedicated to enhancing the educational needs of students.
