Eppendorf celebrates the 60th anniversary of the birth of the pipette master

2021 is an important milestone for anyone working in the laboratory. 60 years ago, Eppendorf introduced the world's first industrially manufactured piston stroke pipette, completely changing the way liquids are handled. Eppendorf'Marburg Pipette' was launched in 1961 and has the same basic elements as found in today’s laboratories: a spring-loaded piston that can be stopped precisely at a set volume level, and a detachable move made of plastic Liquid dispenser tip.

Smart mind solves problems

Until the 1950s, scientists used straws to transfer liquids; a technique in which users suck liquids into thin glass tubes through their mouths. Not only do these pipettes often use hazardous chemicals such as sulfuric acid for cleaning, but it is also rumored that mouth pipetting is associated with the ingestion of harmful substances, including typhoid cultures and even plutonium.

In 1958, the German doctor Heinrich Schnitger was frustrated with the lack of oral pipetting, and he constructed a "device for quickly and accurately pipetting small volumes of liquid" and applied for a patent for it. .

Eppendorf was the first to realize the importance of Schnitger's invention and further develop it. This work eventually formed the "Marburg pipette"-the world's first commercial piston stroke pipette, launched by Eppendorf in 1961. Together with the first disposable tube ("Eppi") for processing microliter volumes, microliter centrifuge and thermal mixer,'Marburg Pipette' forms Eppendorf's microtitration system; a revolutionary tool set in many scientific disciplines , Now defines the standard for research laboratories around the world.

Since Eppendorf introduced the first commercial piston stroke pipette, an incredible 60 years have passed. A tool that fundamentally changes science. This critical moment means that Eppendorf's DNA has been deeply rooted in every piston stroke pipette made since then. However, the story does not end there. Eppendorf is committed to providing the best liquid handling solutions and continuously introducing innovative designs to make the laboratory a more efficient, safer and better place.

Today, Eppendorf customers can choose from a wide range of instruments, consumables and services to meet their liquid handling needs and further accelerate their research.

To celebrate this event, Eppendorf studied the development history of pipetting technology over the years and our future development direction in the field of liquid handling. A comprehensive series of articles, voices of our customers, sweepstakes, etc. can be found on our pipette anniversary website.
