Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a compound with strong oxidizing ability, which can fight against a variety of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts and spores1,2. It has been used in various formulations of bleach, disinfectant and disinfectant.

The concentration of H2O2 varies according to the purpose of the formulation1. Although H2O2 at a concentration of 3% is an effective disinfectant, H2O2 at a maximum concentration of 0.5% is considered effective against surface viruses2.

The formula contains a low concentration of H2O2 to help stop bacterial spores that contaminate the solution3. For this application, the H2O2 content is determined by redox titration, using cerium(IV) sulfate as the titrant and DMi140-SC electrode.

1. Titrant: Cerium sulfate, Ce(SO4)2, 0.1 mol/L

H2O2 + 2Ce(SO4)2 → Ce2(SO4)3 + H2SO4 + O2

1. Determination of cerium sulfate titer c(Ce(SO4)2) = 0.1 mol/L Obtained titer value = 1.00505 s = 0.00172 srel = 0.171% n = 6

The H2O2 content in the disinfectant and disinfectant samples is determined, and the value obtained by cerium sulfate redox titration is exactly the same as the expected H2O2 content in the two samples. In terms of comparable standard deviations (ie srel), the repeatability of standards and samples is excellent.

The cerium is precipitated with sodium hydroxide, filtered, and treated as special waste.

METTLER TOLEDO instruments are used in research, scientific and quality control laboratories, as well as many other laboratories in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and cosmetic industries. They are the global market leaders for the three most commonly used instrument groups in laboratories (such as balances, pipettes, and pH meters), and we are pioneers in the field of automated chemistry.

METTLER TOLEDO industrial solutions cover different steps in a series of manufacturing processes for many of the same customers serving the laboratory. Solutions cover everything from raw material receipt, online process control and offline packaging control to logistics and transportation. Increasingly, these solutions are fully integrated into customers' IT environments, helping them to automate their work processes.
